contrasts

I've always considered myself a study in contrasts. A little of this, AND a little of this. X, but also Y. You might consider this, but then again on the other hand that.

And so it goes when it comes to beauty. I went to a traditional women's college, one that wasn't quite as feminist empowering as I've always imagined Smith, say, or Wellesley, maybe, to be. While there, I grew my fingernails long-ish and painted them regularly.

Then I was accepted, for graduate school, to a large state university in the deep south with a huge football program and plenty of greek life and very definite ideas on femininity and the door was literally but not figuratively always, always held open for me. But I was accepted into a science program, hardcore physics / math / chemistry / bio-geo-chemistry sort of work, male dominated, where you had to fight to be heard and taken seriously. I showed up the first day in my neat t-shirt tucked into clean pressed shorts (a look I thought said serious student), long hair, long fingernails, and my beloved Tretorns (remember those?) and my professor took one look at me and I swear sighed a little sigh. Everyone else (professors included) wore ripped cutoff shorts and ragged t-shirts and birkenstocks and the other women certainly didn't give a fig about hair or makeup. It was serious, fieldwork science, strap on your work boots and get out in the dirty field and collect and process samples and then go out and do it all over again. Who had time for painted fingernails? I kept doing it, for a while, because I found it relaxing and I liked the dichotomy of long hot pink nails and hard core field science, but eventually I stopped because I knew people didn't take me seriously, and sometimes image is everything and perception is reality.

And then I got an office job where we just looked at other people's science and thought about what it meant and I kept my fingernails bare because I wasn't really an office person I was a field scientists and hard core, dammit. But then I realized I wasn't ever going to be a scientist in the field ever again and it was kinda fun to paint nails, so went back to it on and off, but kept my nails short. And then I worked for a non profit advocacy environmental organization and you better believe there was no nail painting, but then I started pedicures because that could be something fun for me and no one else had to see it and I could still be taken seriously as an environmentalist and still have fun painting my toes (or, the ultimate luxury of having someone else paint my toes!).

Through all this, I've never worn much makeup, and almost none at all now since the goopy eye incident of 2008. (Which never really resolved, despite new makeup - since that day, makeup makes my eyes itchy. Who knows.)

I have a small stash of polish, which my 4 year old discovered and loves. Loves, loves loves. I painted one of her hands blue and the other pink last night, and she could not wait to get to school and show her friends, all of whom also had painted nails.

You wouldn't think a person could write so much about nail painting, would you? Except I saw a beauty story in a magazine and became fascinated with a color I saw and googled it and would you believe there are (a large number of) blogs devoted to nail polish? I had no idea. And that's only what came up on page one of google for one color. Who knew this? Seriously, over here we have the infertility community, and over there the food people, let's not forget the political blogs of all types, and the mommy bloggers and then there's the illness bloggers, and then fashion, and over there - the nail polish bloggers. The internet is a fabulous, fabulous place. What in the world did we ever do for info before the internet? I'll tell you we didn't type that much, that much I know, cause if my nails get more than a quarter of an inch past my fingers I suddenly can't type well at all.

I've always been mostly a deep rich ruby or pink or plummy kind of gal, though anything goes on the toes. But I've seen a lot of darker colors lately, especially on short nails. So today I stopped by a salon and picked up this dark green color and when I was on a conference call I put on a base coat and then two coats of color and though it's been a while didn't do too bad of a job, if I do say so myself.

I couldn't quite get the proper nail blog pose right, but had to show off. OPI Here Today Aragon Tomorrow, from their spanish line fall 2009.

It was fun to paint my nails. I'm considering doing it more regularly, though I still have these weird feelings that painting my nails says something about me that I don't want said. At least out loud. So my question of the day, do you paint (or have someone else paint) yours? Do you wonder if you have painted nails that you won't be taken as seriously? Or is this just something I worry about?

eta: I know the answer is do whatever makes you happy and why in the world did you write too many words about this? I know that, and I'll do that. I do wonder, though, if anyone else wonders about the image they project, and if being too, hmm, "feminine" for want of a better word, means they aren't taken seriously as professionals or intellectuals or whatever elite term you'd prefer to use. Would you wear polish (mod, dark polish? pale pink only?) to a job interview? Is there a benefit or a detriment to being feminine in a man's world? What do you think?

My Mondrian

A cool Friday afternoon activity - check out Dead Baby Jokes for the explanation.

It's very.......monochromatic. Which is really not me at all. I am a profusion of colors, swirled, sloppy, spilling over. So, um, actually probably not very Mondrian whatsoever.

What great comments on my last post. And for inspiration, check out Am I Doing OK? today. She is doing very well, indeed.

Make your own self portrait as a Mondrian. Like Niobe, send me your link and I'll post it here.

now with less ooze

Boy I am whiny these days. Thanks for the support yesterday. I took a nap, then did some work. My eyes seemed better, but got weepy again at night. But today I am thinking it was all just a bad contacts/tired/makeup kind of thing. So I'll avoid contacts today and put in new ones tomorrow. I'll avoid makeup these next few days, but what I have is fairly new Clinque stuff (simple eyeliner and shadow) and I'm too cheap to throw it out. Will I regret that?

I did watch about 10 minutes of The Price is Right. Too weird without Bob, that was my first impression. I'd have to watch more to get used to it. And then thank goodness for noon time What Not to Wear. Though I always have the oddest dreams when I doze to WNTW - lots of dressing room oddness.

Oh, yeah, my RE called back and helpfully said just call your (non existent) family practitioner.
Thanks!

My unsettledness continues. The first trimester is tough on nearly everyone. Luckily, I've never had extreme nausea (I only threw up one while pregnant with my daughter, but that was the night my husband was on travel and our dog just kept throwing up and throwing up, and after cleaning up piles and piles, yeah, I lost it). But it's hard to gain weight and not fit into clothes but not really look (or want to look) pregnant. Instead, lucky me, I just get to be back at obese! yay, me. And tired. And not drinking. And the food/smell aversions are starting to kick in.

And then there's the whole nuchal/CVS/need for assurance thing. I need to pick up the phone and just schedule the damn CVS. May 1. 3 weeks from yesterday.

So, here's another fun link. I just think this is brilliant:

"the" list

CLC tagged me with this meme, which I've always loved. Remember this Friends episode? The celebrities, if you were in a committed relationship, that if you bumped into them and they were interested, you were allowed to sleep with, without repercussions? And Ross went a little too far and laminated his list, and bumped into Isabella Rosselini, but he had decided to take her of his list? Good stuff.

At the time, it was a hot topic at happy hours. We talked about it endlessly at work, and we noticed that guys would immediately rattle off like 20 names without thinking. But women would hem and haw and caveat. Ralph Fiennes, but only in The English Patient, not his other ferret faced roles (late 90s, remember. I can't imagine anyone would list him now). Or Matthew McConaughey, but only if he showered (hmm, and this one still rings true 10 years later).

Actually, when I was going through some boxes last year, I found the list of all my coworker's lists. But who the heck knows which of the boxes it might be in. So here goes, off the top of my head -

1. Clooney. Is he the quintessential charming movie star or what? Cary Grant for our generation. Though, I do wish he'd stop with the plastic surgery. I think he's starting to look a little stretched out (so that's my caveat, Clooney about 5-8 years ago). A while back he was on the cover of Esquire or GQ - I tried to Google but couldn't find it. The picture was of a crowd of men wearing suits all facing away, and Clooney facing foward, reaching through the crowd. Yummy. God, I love that picture. I should have bought and framed that cover.

2. When I was a teenager, I never really had crushes on stars, I thought it was stupid. I sort of pretended to like Shaun Cassidy, but really, I thought Tiger Beat was lame and a waste of brain power. There were stars I liked, but never really a crush. Imagine my surprise when I developed, in my late 20s, my first real crush. On Ben Affleck. God help me. He just seems real, he has a sense of humor, he's a big lug, but smart, interested in politics. The JLo thing almost did it in. But this is good stuff. Did I mention he had a sense of humor?

3. Lord this one is embarrassing. After years of no real celebrity crushes, but reeling from the "Bennifer" debacle, American Idol did me in.

The smoldering eyes. The peering from his lanky hair. That thing he used to do with the "call me" when Ryan would give his number. I was on a business trip in Europe when he was kicked off, and was so upset I couldn't bear to watch the episode (tivo). I was pregnant at the time, so I'm blaming it on hormones except I saw another clip recently of him singing Hallelujah and I still think he is yummy. Great song.

4. Johnny Depp. I always say there are two Johnny Depps - good Johnny and bad. I like the clean cut look with just a little scruffiness. And Johnny Depp can really pull out the weird. But when he looks good, he really looks good. I LOVED him in Sweeney Todd. LOVED. Am pissed they canceled the Golden Globes and so he didn't get to give an acceptance speech for his win. Though usually award show Johnny is bad Johnny.

5. This one is a catch all in some ways. I love old movies, and I love Cary Grant, and I should put him on my list. But, he's almost too suave and debonair for a country girl like me. So, despite what we now know about him, love Rock Hudson. Love this movie (Come September). It's on fairly often - set your Tivo and enjoy.

I seriously geek over this meme so much, I am tagging everyone reading. Let me know if you do.

10 things I don't get

So this meme has been floating around a while. Clever Niobe, Meg, and Tash have all done it. I was going to be all fancy and have pictures and youtube and whatnot, but then decided I just needed to post it, for gosh sake, since I wrote this weeks ago.

I have another meme I have got to do - as soon as I think of a cool-ish thing I could give away. But since I am in possession of original Niobe photos, the guilt I haven't done my part is growing.

Anyway, here are 10 things I don't get. In no particular order.

1. People who insist on driving in the left lane. All. The. Time. MOVE! OVER!

2. Frying potatoes is a high form of gastronomic art, where it be frites or hashbrowns slung at the local diner. Tatertots? Not so much.

3. Coffee

4. Electricity – I don’t get energy making at all. Stored energy, potential energy, the whole thing. Come the apocalypse, should I survive, I’d have nothing to offer in rebuilding society.

5. Waxing – we’re concerned about pedophilia in this country, and we wax off any hair the makes us look like adults, not pre-pubescents? And now men are waxing? Are you kidding me? (full disclosure – I like smooth legs a lot. Leg shaving is a must. Call me a hypocrite. And I trim, don’t get me wrong. And tidying up the legs, ok. It’s the bare/landing strip look I don’t get.)

6. People who don’t believe in evolution. Look, I don’t get electricity, but clearly it works. Same thing. And Sherri Sheppard? Don’t get me started. Yes, I know she clarified the next day, but she’s still an idiot.

7. People who mix up it’s and its. I’m sorry if I offend, but it’s not hard. If in doubt, simply read the sentence replacing it’s with it is. If ‘it is’ makes sense, it’s it’s. If ‘it is’ does not make sense, it’s its (this is far simpler than it appears in type). The same applies to your and you’re. There are many confusing rules in English grammar. This is not one of them.

8. Why The Amazing Race always wins the Emmy for best reality show, over say, Project Runway. Admittedly, I’ve never watched The Amazing Race, but Project Runway! The drama! The pressure! The tears! Tim Gunn! Heidi! Auf Wiedersehen! Genius.

9. The evolutionary benefits of teething. Why does it take two years? And cause such misery and exhaustion?

10. Chardonnay

Private practice

So when I decided to add Private Practice to my list of shows I watch, why didn't it occur to me that Addison Montgomery was a baby doctor? And there was an infertility specialist on the show, too? And that every episode would deal with things that can possibly go wrong with having, or trying to have, a baby?
